What are Garage Door Insulation Kits?

Have you ever gone into your garage and found the temperature to be unacceptable? Maybe it was either too cold or too hot to be comfortable for you? Well, one of the biggest reasons for the temperature of your garage is your garage door.

what-are-garage-door-insulation-kits

This is a very easy problem to fix due to the fact that there are a number of garage door insulation kits available at a reasonable price. It is pretty easy to install a garage door insulation kit and it is one of the most cost-effective ways of making the temperature inside your garage more comfortable for you.

The best garage door insulation is available in panel form (sometimes pre-cut panels) or roll form where you need to cut the insulation to size. What a garage door insulation kit does is reflect radiant heat so that your garage will be warmer when it is cold outside and cooler in the hot months.

A garage door insulation kit will provide you with the following benefits:

Whatever the situation in your garage, buying and installing a garage door insulation kit should make a significant difference to the temperature inside. It is common sense that if you plug gaps around your garage door things are going to get better.

Types of Garage Door Insulation

There are four main types of insulation available for garage doors:

Fiberglass Batt

Fiberglass is the most common material used to insulate garage doors. You can purchase fiberglass in either pre-cut batt form or in rolls that you cut yourself. Often you will see fiberglass insulation has a paper or foil backing which provides a barrier to vapor.

It is usually easy to install fiberglass garage door insulation and it is normally the most cost-effective material to use to insulate a garage door.

Rigid Foam

You can usually purchase rigid foam insulation in the form of large sheets. The rigid foam sheets are often made from polystyrene and this provides very good insulation per inch of thickness. You can easily cut the rigid foam sheets to fit your garage door. The only issue with rigid foam is that you need to go for a material that is fire resistant.

Spray Foam

It is pretty expensive to insulate your garage door using spray foam. You need to use a special spray gun that sprays two different materials at the same time. When the two materials come together this creates the foam.

Spray foam has the advantage that you can apply it to smaller spaces, it is good for reducing moisture and it is strong. You can use closed-cell foam which includes a gas to help the foam to enlarge and insulate. It is stronger than open-cell foam.

Open-cell foam is not as dense as closed-cell foam. The foam is less expensive but it is not as effective as closed-cell foam when it comes to its insulation properties. You need to apply thicker layers of open-cell foam to achieve a similar result.

Cellulose

You will often see cellulose insulation made out of recycled paper (e.g. newspaper). The material receives a chemical treatment to ensure that it is fire resistant and this also helps to keep rodents away. This is environmentally friendly insulation and more and more people are using it these days.

How Garage Door Insulation Kits Work

A garage door insulation kit comprises panels or a roll of insulation material, some heavy-duty tape to seal pieces together, a device for cutting the panels or roll (e.g. a razor), and full installation instructions.

The idea with garage insulation kits is that you cover the entire garage door and cover any gaps at the side and the top or bottom of the door so that you prevent cold or warm air from entering. The kits will usually contain everything that you need to fully insulate your garage door and plug any gaps.

The material used for the insulation is important. There are a lot of reflective kits that ensure the deflection of any radiant heat. It is a lot more cost-effective to use a garage door insulation kit than it is to hire a contractor to do the work for you.

What are the Benefits of a Garage Door Insulation Kit?

  • You can save on your energy bills
  • It will help to create a comfortable temperature in the garage
  • An installed insulation kit can provide a sound barrier to make things quieter in your garage
  • It will help to increase the durability of your existing garage door
  • It can be a good way to keep rodents out of your garage
  • You can park your vehicles in the garage knowing that the internal temperature is more suitable
  • An insulation kit can provide additional protection for your vehicles and other items stored in your garage

With most garage doors there is not a perfect fit and so any gaps or openings allow cold or warm air to get inside. Your garage door insulation kit will help to seal some of these gaps. Please remember that the insulation kit will only seal the gaps around the garage door and you may have other openings in your garage in windows for example.

When you install a garage door installation kit you will increase the overall thermal efficiency of your home. The “R” value is your home’s thermal efficiency level. If you do not insulate your garage effectively then this can affect the temperature of the rest of your home. This is especially true when it comes to rooms that have a direct connection to your garage.

This garage door insulation kit is ideal for most pan-style garage doors that are either 8 feet or 9 feet. The insulation material here is polystyrene laminate and you get 8 high-impact panels in this kit. If you have double steel garage doors then you will need to purchase two kits to get the job done.

This insulation material has an R-value of around 5 and the panels are all 1.25 inches thick. We found it really easy to handle the materials in this garage door insulation kit and everything was really lightweight weighing in at around 10 pounds.

The Matador Garage Door Insulation Kit is ideal for both cold and hot weather scenarios. It does a good job insulating the door and regulating the temperature to a comfortable level within the garage. We noticed a reduction in sound levels too. The panels are not reflective but they do look good once you have installed them.

EDITOR’S NOTE: We liked the Matador Garage Door Insulation Kit a lot. When you first get the kit you may be shocked to find that you are only receiving polystyrene sheets for your money but the insulation is really good. You will need to have some tools ready and we recommend you wear gloves. The polystyrene goes all over the place when you are cutting.

3.Owens Corning 500824 Garage Door Insulation Kit Review

This garage door insulation kit is a very popular choice and is ideal if you have a steel garage door. The insulation material is fibreglass and the R-value of these panels is around 8. We were impressed with the insulation performance of this kit as it provided a very noticeable improvement in the comfort levels of the garage.

owens-corning-500824-garage-door-insulation-kit-review

The Owens Corning 500824 Garage Door Insulation Kit panels have a washable white facing in vinyl and you get a fastening system in the kit which is adhesive squares and clips. We were able to insulate a standard 9 feet steel garage door in a little over an hour. The clips do a good job holding all of the panels securely.

One of the other benefits of this garage door insulation kit is noise reduction. The difference was really noticeable after installation. You get 8 panels with one kit and if you have a larger garage door (more than 9 feet) then you will need two kits to finish the job.

The instructions with this garage door insulation kit are really good and you are left in no doubt what you need to do with each step. You will need a straight edge and a tape measure and a good utility knife for cutting. A marker is important too as you will need to clearly mark the positions of the clips on your garage door.

The Smart Garage Reflective Garage Door Insulation Kit comes with strong double-sided tape to fix the insulation material to your garage door. In both hot and cold conditions the tape adheres and holds well. We found it relatively straightforward to install this kit and there is a well-made instruction video you can watch.

5.Cellofoam Garage Door Insulation Kit Review

Cellofoam is another American company with a good reputation in this market. This garage door insulation kit is good for a single steel garage door and if you have a double door then you will require two kits. The R-value of the insulation material is around 4.8 and it does make a big difference to the comfort level of a garage.

The Cellofoam Garage Door Insulation Kit has panels made from polystyrene foam. You will need to measure and cut the panels to fit your door so you need a measuring tape, a straight edge, and a sharp knife. We found the installation of these panels reasonably straight forward but some customers reported difficulties with the process.

We found the installation instructions to be precise and clear. With the Cellofoam Garage Door Insulation Kit, you get vinyl laminated panels that look pretty good. Each panel measures 20 inches by 54 inches by 1.4 inches so they are pretty large. You will not need to use any adhesives or clips to install these panels.

6.Reflectix BP24050 Bubble Pack Garage Door Insulation kit Review

This is not really a garage door insulation kit but it has a deserved place in our top 10. What you will get here is a 50 feet roll of 24-inch bubble pack installation that you can use to insulate your garage door. The insulation has foil on each side and this is reflective. The insulation material is polyethylene.

reflectix-bp24050-bubble-pack-garage-door-insulation-kit-review

We installed this insulation on one of our garage doors and it did improve things a bit. The Reflectix BP24050 Bubble Pack Insulation is very lightweight which makes it easy to manage as far as installing it is concerned. This is environmentally friendly insulation that is ideally suited for heat reflection.

The insulation is high quality and has a number of different layers with actual aluminum used on the outsides. This insulation is durable and tough and having bubbles in it means that there is good resistance to heat.

The R-value of the Reflectix BP24050 Bubble Pack Insulation is around 14.8 and in general, we found it easy to install on our garage door. With the insulation material being so thin and non-toxic you can actually use a pair of scissors to safely cut it. You will need good double-sided tape to fix your garage door. It is fire-resistant as well.

EDITOR’S NOTE: The Reflectix BP24050 Bubble Pack Insulation is a good option if you are on a budget and don’t mind spending a lot of time cutting the insulation material to size for your garage door. This is not the most effective insulating material available so you might want to spend a little more money on a more effective solution.

7.Anco Garage Door Insulation Kit Review

If you are looking for a quality garage door insulation kit with a good R-value then this is a good choice. The R-value of this insulation is 9 and when we installed it we noticed a real difference in the internal garage temperature levels. This kit works well for insulating in both hot and cold climates.

anco-garage-door-insulation-kit-review

The Anco Garage Door Insulation Kit is basically a large roll of fiberglass insulation. It has a white coating to it and the installation process is straightforward. You don’t have to use clips here as you do with other fiberglass insulation. A good heavy double-sided tape will do the job very effectively.

You will find this insulation pretty thick at around 2 inches. It uses a combination of fiberglass and other polymer materials. All you need to install this insulation is a good cutting instrument, a straight edge, and a measuring tape. As fiberglass is involved we recommend that you also use gloves, a mask, and goggles for safety.

Another good feature of the Anco Garage Door Insulation Kit is that it delivers a good level of noise reduction as well. The insulation is safe so you don’t have to worry about small children or pets around it.

  • Very good insulating properties.
  • Easy installation.

EDITOR’S NOTE: The Anco Garage Door Insulation Kit has great thermal and sound barrier insulation qualities. We liked the fact that you don’t have to use a cumbersome clip and adhesive square arrangement to install. Strong double-sided tape is all that’s required. It can be a bit heavy for some garage doors though.

8.Cellofoam Garage Door Insulation Kit 8 Piece Review

Another offering from Cellofoam makes our top 10. This time it is the 8 piece garage door insulation kit. The insulation panels are made from closed cell polystyrene and we found them to provide effective insulation and make the garage a lot more comfortable. This insulation has an R-value of around 4 for every inch.

cellofoam-garage-door-insulation-kit-8-piece-review

The Cellofoam Garage Door Insulation Kit 8 Piece has rigid panels that are strong and there is a high impact vinyl laminate on one side. This looks pretty good when you have installed it on your garage door.

The panels weigh around 0.3 pounds each so for a standard garage door you will add around 4 pounds in additional weight. This shouldn’t hamper performance in any way but you need to check this.

It is not difficult to install the panels supplied with the Cellofoam Garage Door Insulation Kit 8 Piece. You will need to cut the panels to fit your garage door and to do this you just need a measuring tape and straight edge and a good cutting tool. The installation process can get really messy.

Pros
  • Good insulation characteristics.
  • Strong material.
  • Vinyl laminate makes it look good.
Cons
  • Messy installation.
  • Relies on horizontal rails in the door.

EDITOR’S NOTE: The Cellofoam Garage Door Insulation Kit 8 Piece is another quality kit that will make a real difference to the comfort levels of your garage. Your steel garage door needs horizontal rails to hold the panels in place and if this isn’t the case then you will need to use strong double-sided tape to hold it. Installation certainly gets a bit messy.

9.Reach Barrier 3009 Garage Door Insulation Kit Review

This is another reflective product with bubble protection that is pretty effective at insulating against radiant heat. The insulating panels have four layers which include 2 radiant barriers and 2 barrier bubble components. This garage door insulation kit is fire resistant and meets all of the current fire codes.

reach-barrier-3009-garage-door-insulation-kit-review

The Reach Barrier 3009 Garage Door Insulation Kit includes 8 panels that you install using supplied adhesive squares. The installation process is pretty simple but you will need to cut the panels to fit your garage door. There is an instructional guide for installation in the kit which we found useful.

You will need a straight edge and a tape measure as well as a good cutting blade. Because the panels have a polyethylene construction you do not need to wear protective items such as gloves and a mask.

We were pretty impressed with the insulating power of the Reach Barrier 3009 Garage Door Insulation Kit. After installation, there was quite a difference in the comfort level of our garage. It didn’t take us too long to install the panels either which was another good feature.

Pros
  • Good insulating performance.
  • Fire-resistant.
  • Simple installation.
Cons
  •  Not all panels were the same size in our kit.

EDITOR’S NOTE: We thought that the Reach Barrier 3009 Garage Door Insulation Kit did a pretty good job in insulating a steel garage door. The adhesive squares are easy to mount and hold the panels firmly. Cutting the panels to size was simple and the overall install was fast. We ended up with different sized panels in our kit which was strange.

10.Ado Products GDIKS Single Garage Door Insulation Kit Review

This is the final garage door insulation kit to make our top ten. The insulation material has a very respectable R rating of 8 and once we had installed the kit we did notice a significant improvement in the comfort level of our garage. One kit is suitable for a steel garage door of 9 feet by 7 feet. If you have a larger door you will need at least 2 kits.

ado-products-gdiks-single-garage-door-insulation-kit-review

The Ado Products GDIKS Single Garage Door Insulation Kit comes with a roll of 22-inch wide fibreglass insulation. You also get a number of metal pins and caps that you need to use to install the insulation on your garage door. These have a very strong adhesive for fixing and they are strong enough so that they will not break during installation or after it.

We found it reasonably easy to install the insulation despite the pins and caps. We had to cut the material to size and all we used for this was a good knife and a straight edge and tape measure. We used protective gloves and a mask as the insulation contains fibreglass which can really irritate your skin and throat.

After installing the Ado Products GDIKS Single Garage Door Insulation Kit we also noticed a lowering of sound levels. The insulation is attractive to look at and it is easy to clean as well. Some customers did report that the metal fasteners came loose after a while which is a concern.

  • Good insulating properties.
  • Provides a sound barrier.
  • Installation is simple and quick.
Cons
  • Fixing pins can come loose after a while.

EDITOR’S NOTE: The Ado Products GDIKS Single Garage Door Insulation Kit provides a good degree of insulation but there are better products for this. The sound barrier was pretty good and it wasn’t difficult to install the insulation. We didn’t have any issues with the pin and cap system but some customers reported that this fails after a while.

How do you Install a Garage Door Insulation Kit?

You need to bear in mind that there are different types of garage door insulation kits and that this installation guide is general. However, the instructions below can probably be applied to almost any kit.

how-do-you-install-a-garage-door-insulation-kit

The first thing that you need to do is to measure your garage doors. If you have a large double-sized door it could be oversized and you may need more than one garage insulation kit to complete the installation successfully.

Some insulation kits come with a cutting device (such as a knife or razor device) and sealing tape. You need to check what is included in the kit that you choose and if the tape and cutting tool isn’t included then you have to purchase these separately.

We recommend that you thoroughly clean your garage door first. If you haven’t cleaned the door for a while then it is probably very dirty and you might need to use a vacuum cleaner and other tools to get it really clean. You will probably have to apply some adhesive to the door as part of the installation and it will not adhere properly to a dirty door.

Next, we suggest that you open up your garage door installation kit in full and then lay the insulation out flat. With some kits, the instructions will require that you layout the insulation the previous night before you go ahead with the installation. This is so that it can get back into its original shape if it was rolled up in the kit. Be sure your garage floor is clean.

The next step is to measure your garage door and mark it out for each panel. It is important that you determine the center of every panel on your garage door and then halve this so you finish up with two marks for each panel.

Once you have all of your marks in place it’s time for you to add the necessary adhesive to the garage door. You will usually find adhesive provided in square packs in your kit. Read the instructions carefully to see how you need to apply the adhesive squares properly. Please be aware that these adhesive squares are very sticky so if you put them in the wrong places you will have a very difficult job getting them off.

With the adhesive squares in place, you can remove the protective paper from them and then start to add the clips to them. Again you need to read the instructions carefully here so that you add them in the correct way.

It’s time now to add the insulation panels. You can cut them to size as you go along. It’s really important that you work these up into the corners and you may find it difficult to keep the panels in place while you are trying to install them. But once you have the corners and sides tucked in properly the panels will stay put.

Now it’s time to make the holes in the insulation panels for the clips. Use a knife to cut a small hole for the clip to come through. You should be able to easily feel the clip under the insulation panel. You may need to push back some of the insulation to ensure that you can mate the clips correctly.

So as you have probably guessed you need to click on another clip to each clip under your insulation panels. This is an easy job once you have cut appropriate holes in the insulation panels for the two to meet.

We recommend that you apply foil tape to the vertical edges of your garage door. Sometimes there is a lip to keep your insulation panels tucked in and sometimes there isn’t and it looks like the panel could fall out at any time.

It’s actually very unlikely that an insulation panel would fall out in this manner but the foil tape helps to prevent this and is a good insulator itself. Foil tape is the best for sticking to metal garage doors so get this rather than another type of insulating tape.

The Top Best Brands for Garage Door Insulation Kits

There are some very well-known brands manufacturing garage door insulation kits. We have included a number of them in our final top 10 list. Some of the more famous brands in this market are:

  • Matador
  • Owens Corning
  • Cellofoam
  • Reflectix
  • Anco
  • Reach Barrier

While a brand can be important it shouldn’t be the only thing that you look for when deciding to purchase a garage door insulation kit. There are some relatively new names in the market that are providing high-quality kits that are just as good, and in some cases better, than the most well-known brands.

How to choose the Best Garage Door Insulation Kit: Buying Guide

By now we hope that you have decided to purchase a garage door insulation kit to improve the energy efficiency of your home and to make your garage a more comfortable place to be in. So we have put together this buying guide for you to help you to make the right choice of garage door insulation kit.

how-to-choose-the-best-garage-door-insulation-kit-buying-guide

The first thing to consider is the type of insulation material provided. A lot of garage door insulation kits will provide fiberglass panels or rolls. It is a very effective insulation material as the fibers trap pockets of air that do an excellent job in keeping out the heat or the cold. Fiberglass also has the advantage of being a very good sound insulator too.

If you are looking for a “green” garage door insulation kit then look for those that contain polystyrene insulation material. Usually, they make these panels from recycled materials. With this kind of kit, you will receive large sheets of insulation that you simply cut to size. Polystyrene is not as flexible as fibreglass and can be trickier to work with but it does have excellent temperature insulation and sound insulation qualities and is waterproof.

An insulation material we haven’t mentioned yet is polyethylene. This is usually in “bubble wrap” format on a roll and is fairly easy to cut to size because it is around 1 ½ inches thick. Polyethylene is a very good thermal insulator but it won’t provide much sound insulation.

There is usually an “R” value associated with garage door insulation kits. In this case, “R” stands for “resistance”. It specifies the insulation materials capable of preventing temperature flow. The most efficient insulation has a high “R” rating.

If your garage is detached and you have already insulated the walls then a kit with an R-value of 10 or more is a good choice. If there is no wall insulation in your detached garage then go with an R rating of 6 for the best results. With an attached garage choose a kit with an R-value of a minimum of 12 particularly if you have insulated other parts of the garage.

You need to take the kind of garage door you have into account when buying an insulation kit. If you have a steel garage door then you will find it is able to handle any kind of insulation. The type of insulation material you go for really doesn’t matter that much with steel garage doors.

If your garage door is made from wood then we recommend that you choose polystyrene insulation material. The rigidity of the polystyrene material will work the best with wood panels. You can use two layers of polystyrene insulation sheet to provide really effective insulation.

Some garage doors have windows in them and if this is the case for you then we suggest that apply a sealant layer to the windows after your insulation is in place. You can go for polystyrene again here or in some cases you could use other materials.

What if your garage door is flat? Well, here we would recommend using polyethylene or polystyrene for the insulation material. It will be fairly easy to fix this insulation to a flat door using strong adhesive or even double-sided tape.

What is the best material to use with automatic garage doors? Well, you need a lot of flexibility here so fibreglass or polyethylene will work best. Automatic doors often have a lot of moving parts so you need to ensure you install the insulation properly so that you don’t restrict or jam up any of the machinery.

If you live in a warm climate all year round then choose a radiant barrier garage door insulation kit. You get reflective sheets on the insulation materials and when you install this type of insulation you must ensure there is an air gap between the insulation and the garage door.

If you live in a climate where it is cold a lot or at various times of the year then you will require a garage door insulation pack that has at least an R-value of 6. Two-inch fiberglass is a good choice here as it is flexible and has a good R rating.

We also recommend that you add weather stripping to the sides, top, and bottom of your garage door for cold climates. You can add this fairly easily to steel doors as there is usually a track for this and you will need to nail this to a wooden door.

Frequently Asked Questions while buying Garage Door Insulation Kits: FAQs.

Q1. What will a garage door insulation kit cost?

A good quality garage door insulation kit is going to cost from $50 to $100 or more. You need to work out how many kits you need to purchase. One kit is normally sufficient for a garage door of 9 feet. If your door is larger then you will need more than one kit and obviously, this is going to cost more.

Q2. What is usually included in a Garage Door Insulation Kit?

You will get the insulation panels or a roll of insulation material that you will need to cut to size. There will be a method of fastening such as adhesive squares and clips or adhesive tape. With the more expensive kits, you will normally find gloves and a cutting device included.

Q3. Will the insulation be too heavy for my garage door?

If you have a standard 9-foot garage door then the additional weight of the insulation should not be a problem. With larger garage doors that have a mechanism for opening, this could be an issue. We recommend that you discuss the insulation of your automatic garage door with a professional before you proceed.

Q4.Couldn’t I just buy the materials and do the job without a kit?

Yes, you could but you would need a bit of DIY experience to do the job properly. The advantage of buying a garage door insulation kit is that everything is provided for you and you get full instructions on how to carry out the job properly.

Q5.Which Garage Door Insulation Kit is right for me to purchase?

It depends on the type of garage door that you have and the R rating that you need. Please refer to our buying guide above for more advice on this.
